The Five Great Mantras

Mantras & Beej Mantras

Mantras are sacred words in Sanskrit. They have been used to invoke deities and planets since the Vedic era. The Sanskrit language has a close association with fifty primordial sounds. Repeating or chanting the Mantras creates vibrations that convey our purpose to the cosmic realm and soothe the mind. This feeling can later be transferred to a meditative state.

Bija or Beej Mantra is a one-syllable word chanted to improve concentration and develop a state of meditation. In Sanskrit, 'Beej' means 'seed'. These sounds are believed to have seed energy of specific energies, deities, elements, and even the entire cosmos. They are naturally energetic. Beej Mantras can either be chanted individually or often contained in longer Mantras.

Types of Beej Mantras

Shakti Beej Mantra, Panchtatva Beej Mantra, and Seven Chakras Beej Mantra are three types of Beej Mantra.

Shakti is known for power, energy, and strength. This divine feminine energy is inside each of us. Shakti Beej Mantra can directly impact the inner layer of consciousness and Prana energy. Hence, devotion, concentration, and carefulness are essential to chanting it.

OM, AIM, HRIM/HREEM, SHRIM/SHREEM, and KLIM/KLEEM are the five important Shakti Beej Mantras.

OM (AUM) - This Beej Mantra is the mystic name for Trimurti. It represents the union of the three deities - 'A' for Brahma, 'U' for Vishnu, and 'M' for Shiva. The three sounds also represent the three Vedas (Rig, Sama and Yajur Veda). OM (AUM) gives magnificent power and meaning to all other mantras.

AIM—It relates to the throat chakra. This AIM Beej Mantra evokes Devi Saraswati, the goddess of speech, learning, music, and dance. People who pray for knowledge and education must chant this Beej Mantra.

HRIM—This Mantra belongs to Mahamaya or Bhuvaneshwari. ‘Ha' means Shiva, ‘Ra' means Prakriti, ‘ee' means Mahamaya. It is said to be the primal sound of Mahamaya, energizing all her Mantras and drawing them into the heart, both the heart chakra (Anahata) and the spiritual heart (Hridaya).

SHRIM—This Beej Mantra belongs to Devi Lakshmi and is beneficial for evoking wealth. 'Sha' means Mahalakshmi, 'Ra' means wealth and 'ee' means fulfillment. People wishing abundant wealth and a pompous life must chant this Beej Mantra.

KLIM - KLIM represents Kamakhya Devi. This Beej Mantra is believed to hold the power of attraction and desire. Chanting "KLIM" can improve personal charm and physical attractiveness. It can also help improve self-esteem and self-confidence. Some chant this Beej Mantra for spiritual growth and inner transformation.

These five Shakti Beej Mantras help to harmonize and unify our five Pranas and connect us to their counterparts operating throughout the universe.

PRANA: Prana relates to OM (AUM) as a Mantra and carries the cosmic Prana.

UDANA: It governs the throat chakra and the power of articulate speech, which connects us to our deeper intelligence in communication.

VYANA: Vyana, which expands outward and upward through the heart, relates to HREEM as the expansive solar energy force.

SAMANA: Samana, which brings harmony, balance, and calmness, relates to SHRIM as the harmonizing lunar energy. It also helps to balance the navel chakra.

APANA: Apana, which governs our earth and water energies, relates to KLIM, a force of love and creativity.
